OBSTACLES TO OPPORTUNITIES KEYNOTE“The Why’s and Wherefores”
by Brian Crosby Sparks, Nevada http://www.learningismessy.com/blog/ The Poseidon Adventure rip
Wow! What powerful ways to use tech tools in the classroom.
What were the main points made during this session, the “takeaways?”
Brian’s points were about how he found solutions to problems through technology.
Obstacles:
- Lack of audience or reason to think critically about their work
- Lack of voice for student concerns and opinions
- Curriculum stripped of creativity, the arts, and real world applications
- Difficulty sharing learning experiences with students and teachers from other cultures, in other places, or unable to attend school
- How to collaborate, share, and archive work and research easily so they are available at school, home, and with students in other locations
- How to easily share and use digital photos taken on field trips and during class activities.
Opportunities:
- Blogging
- Digital Video
- On-line Video Conferencing with Skype – I lovehow he used Skype to include Celeste, a home-bound student, in theclass everyday.
- Wiki pages
- Online Photo-sharing with Flikr
What questions did you have after this presentation? How does he manage a classroom in a “studio” environment?

How will you apply the learning to your professional situation?
I have long wanted to have my students do digital storytelling with my students. I
would love to create videos with my students like Brian did with his. I
like his idea of making a music video by assigning lines from the song
to groups for students to film. If I were going to do something like that with my class, I wonder about copyright issues with the song we use. It would be fine for the classroom, but if I wanted to put it up on our class web page for everyone to see, then I would have to make sure I had permission to use the music.
In terms of your own professional development, what did you gain from the session?
I learned that different tech tools apply to different situations, and no tech tool is limited to just one situations.
That was also my first view into a classroom with a studio approach to learning. I find the studio an intriguing alternative approach to a traditional classroom structure.
What other resources (including reading material) are relevant to this session? La tumba de la isla maldita download
Blogging, Wikispaces, Skype, and Flikr
His use of these tech tools to overcome obstacles made them all the more powerful in the classroom.
