Wow! What powerful ways to use tech tools in the classroom.

2. Lack of voice for student concerns and opinions
3. Curriculum stripped of creativity, the arts, and real world applications

5. How to collaborate, share, and archive work and research easily so they are available at school, home, and with students in other locations
6. How to easily share and use digital photos taken on field trips and during class activities.

What questions did you have after this presentation?How does he manage a classroom in a “studio” environment?

How will you apply the learning to your professional situation?

I have long wanted to have my students do digital storytelling with my students. I
would love to create videos with my students like Brian did with his. I

like his idea of making a music video by assigning lines from the song
to groups for students to film. If I were going to do something like that with my class, I wonder about copyright issues with the song we use. It would be fine for the classroom, but if I wanted to put it up on our class web page for everyone to see, then I would have to make sure I had permission to use the music.

How to Deal release

I learned that different tech tools apply to different situations, and no tech tool is limited to just one situations.
That was also my first view into a classroom with a studio approach to learning. I find the studio an intriguing alternative approach to a traditional classroom structure.

I loved this presentation! The characters that interrupt the presentation really made it more interesting. This was the most memorable presentation at the 2007 conference.

Not only was it enjoyable, but I also found things I can use in my everyday life of teaching at school. I created a Wikispaces page last year for my class. I had linked it from my class, but I never really used it with my class. This was probably because I didn’t know how to use it well. My students only had access to computers for an hour a week in the computer lab. Next year, I will have 1 thin client computer for every 2 students in my classroom. I’ll be able to use the wiki to create tasks for students. I think I’m going to use our more effectively by placing tasks next to imbedded content with step-by-step instructions. I can “frame the content with support for learning the content all in close proximity.

I liked the structure and taxonomy Drew gave to teaching web 2.0 tools. Good idea to start with YouTube as a social network. We won’t be able to view YouTube videos on the thin clients, but we can use it on my laptop with the projector.

Interesting idea of using the keyboard shortcuts CtrlC & CtrlV to speed up cutting and pasting. It may help my students pick up faster how to cut/copy and paste.

I may try some screencasting next year. I followed Vinnie’s advice and downloaded Cam Studio, so I can do my own screencasting, just like Murph.

Murph did a great job of structuring a gradual introduction of Web 2.0 tools, but where did he get the structure? Did he make it up from his own experience, or did he get the ideas for the structure from somewhere else? He gives great examples of how apply each step, but has he used them? How does he know they work?

Back from Alaska!

Wow!  My family and I just got back from a cruise to Alaska.  We cruised up the inside passage from Vancouver, BC to Whittier.  On the way we saw Humpback whales, Sea Otters,  Elephant seals, Harbor Seals, Orca Whales, glaciers, mountains, rain, and amazing landscapes.

Arctic ground squirrels, Snowshoe Hairs, Red foxes, Carabou, Mouse, Grizzly Bears, mountains, broad glacial valleys, rain, terrifying 1,000 foot drop-offs on the sides of winding dirt roads, and beautiful landscapes.  We stayed at a resort within view for Mt. McKinley (called Denali by the natives), but it was covered with clouds the whole time.

We arrived back about 2 am. but our bodies were still on Alaska time, so it seemed like 11 am.   Seeing night almost seemed strange since we almost never saw the 4 hours of night they had up there.  Hot and muggy 90 degrees in Joplin is a stark contrast to the spring-like 50 degrees in Alaska.

Forget the test! Teach well

I divided this topic about tests and teaching into three parts because it was getting so long. This is part 3. It follows part 1 and part 2 Drip Dippy Donald movie

Teach well – After listening to some educators from Hutchenson schools come talk to use about how they had turned around their schools and got 100% of their students to proficiency in Math and Reading, I wondered how they did it. They talked about data-driven decision-making, Kagan Cooperative Learning

, and Ruby Paine

‘s approaches to dealing with students in poverty. It basically came down to using the best teaching practices for each kid. A lot of my students last year qualified for free or reduced lunches because they were poor. The Ruby Paine talk got me thinking, so I told my principal that I was concerned about how to best teach my class so my poverty students would learn well. She essentially said that I should teach well so my students would learn well.
We know a lot about how students learn. We also know a lot about which teaching practices work the best. I have already blogged about this Battle for Haditha move

Paint Your Wagon the movie before. Part of my purpose of this blog is to explore best teaching practices. I think Robert Marzano has said it pretty well in this book, What Works in Schools

Material Girls psp . (I’m currently reading his book.) Marzano based his research upon which teaching practices raised test scores.
It comes down to integrating good teaching philosophy with good teaching practices. Learning needs to be taught at higher levels on Blooms Taxonomy – teach deeply. Learning needs to be child-centered – teach thoughtfully. Learning needs to be based upon effective teaching practices – teach well. Use these and test scores will rise.

• Teach well
• And the test scores will take care of themselves

This sound like a good topic for a presentation. However, I feel like I need to back up my assertions with some statistics, facts, or something to give my opinions some credibility. Any ideas?
